Training Calendar for Network Teams – Updated
April 21, 2012 | 2 Comments
The State Education Department has released its calendar of trainings for Network Teams and Network Team Equivalents.
The trainings will build the knowledge of Network Team members on implementation of Common Core Learning Standards and teacher and principal evaluations, two core components of the Regents Reform Agenda.
Deputy Commissioner Ken Slentz notes that the trainings are optional, and while SED will cover as much of the travel costs as possible, he does anticipate that there will be a local share. Also, though the teacher and principal evaluation trainings will provide crucial information about district- and school-level implementation, they do not have a bearing on certification of teacher/leader evaluation trainers. Certification processes will be determined by local BOCES, districts, and charter schools as stated in the APPR regulations.
Further information on the resources that are shared at the training and the outcomes after the training will be posted on EngageNY as they become available.

Margaret brings up a good point. It would be the best use of time to be able to have a full day/several contiguous days on a topic. We really need more training on the specific standards within the common core for math. It is not always apparent what the authors were thinking when they wrote the standards, and I would like to better understand what is meant by the sequence and scope of the standards. The math training in the fall was put back to back against ELA training so a fair amount of the time had to be spent explaining to group why we need to change mathematics instruction, and why they shouldn’t fear math. We need progressions specific, deep training to adequately support the teachers as they work to align their instruction to the common core. This type of training will need to be differentiated. If we try to make this training applicable to everyone, then it won’t be specific and intense enough to be beneficial for those of us who are specializing in this area.
Thank you!
There is some confusion about the March dates for Common Core and Teacher Eval conversations. In particular, it appears the ‘daytime’ conversations are for Teacher Eval and the ‘evening’ conversations are ELA CC….some of us do not have responsibility for all of the reform initiatives. For those that focus only on curriculum, it means sacrificing ‘daytime’ hours with something I have no input for to get to the evening conversation about curriculum.
Any chance we could keep one whole day focused on one conversation completely?
I don’t think this would negatively impact those colleagues who are involved in all of the initiatives, and it would certainly help those who are targeting one or another in terms of time issues.
THANKS!!
