Appendix B – Common Core Standards for ELA/Literacy: Text Exemplars and Sample Performance Tasks

July 19, 2011 | 2 Comments

The following text samples exemplify the level of complexity and quality that the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) require all students in a given grade band to engage with. The samples are suggestive of the breadth of texts that students should encounter in the text types required by the Standards. While the choices serve as guideposts in helping educators select texts of similar complexity, quality, and range for their own classrooms, they do not represent a partial or complete reading list.

The CCS for ELA/literacy do provide text exemplars for informational text, but do not further distinguish argumentative text. It would be helpful to have examples of both (even if they overlap) for teachers to investigate side by side.

Thank you for your question. You are correct that Appendix B for the Common Core State Standards for ELA does not specifically include examples of argumentative text (there is a section for informational text); however, there are arguments included in some of the informational text (for example, see King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”). If we come across a list of sample argumentative texts, we will share in the future.
