State Test Results Reveal Persistent Achievement Gap; Reform Efforts Underway to Boost Achievement

The New York State Education Department released the results of the math and English Language Arts (ELA) exams taken by all New York students in grades 3-8 in May 2011. The data showed an overall decline in math scores, while ELA scores were largely unchanged. While the majority of students statewide met or exceeded the state’s proficiency standards in both math and ELA, overall performance remains low and the gaps in achievement persist.

The Department has embarked on an aggressive Regents reform agenda to closing the gap and prepare all students for college and careers. The Regents reform agenda calls for implementation at the district and school level of curricula and assessments aligned with the Common Core Standards and a teacher/leader evaluation system aimed at supporting educator effectiveness.
